Mary How Trust
Mary How Trust ultrasonographer scanning abdomen of male client

Your Scan Appointment

Your scan lasts up to 30 minutes. There is no need to undress, as only your abdomen will be exposed. Ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and a special probe is moved over the surface of the abdomen.

What Happens During Your Scan Appointment?

One or more of the following examinations will be carried out to ensure that there are no visible abnormalities:

  • Abdominal ultrasound
    • For men and women.
    • This is a scan that looks at organs such as the liver, kidneys and gall bladder. If applicable, it includes the abdominal aorta, which will identify any indication of development of an aneurysm.
    • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a condition most prevalent in males over 65 years, develops without symptoms, and is a common cause of sudden death in later life.
    • NB the stomach and small & large bowel cannot be examined by ultrasound scan.
  • Pelvic ultrasound (women only)
    • For women who have their uterus (womb) and/or ovaries.
    • This is carried out at the same time as the abdominal ultrasound to ensure that there is no visible abnormality in the pelvic organs or surrounding area.
    • For this pelvic ultrasound to be successful, the client MUST attend with a full bladder

You will be advised at the time of booking which scans you are eligible for under our current protocol.
